For more then three years the idea of building a secure and easy-to-use messaging system is coming and going to my mind like the tide. But there has always been an excuse for not developing a real product out of it: studies, internships, jobs et cetera. I was literally waiting for someone else to execute my dream. But nobody did.
Now that I’ve got at least a Bsc. degree in the pocket, I thought I can right away develop the software and build a start-up. Unfortunately it turned out that it’s not that easy: While you’re developing something new that does not bring in any money yet, you have to live, eat and pay bills. To finance your living, you have to work at least half of the week in paid jobs.
In my case that means building websites and other software for customers. But customers distract you! They steal your time, let you jump between different projects and phone for trivial reasons. This problem exists nearly unchanged since the ancient scientists, who had to teach students in order to finance their research.
That is why I decided: it’s time to focus. From february on I’ll go to Africa for a couple of months, likely half a year. Living is very affordable in The Gambia, so I’ll take along some money I earned here which will serve me for a very long time. There I can work all day long on a single project, having my mind free from all other jobs and opportunities that are waiting for me in Europe.
